How the Whois Lookup Works
This whois lookup tool queries RDAP, the Registration Data Access Protocol, which is the modern, standardized successor to the classic WHOIS protocol. Instead of parsing inconsistent plain text from dozens of different registries, RDAP returns clean, structured JSON, which is what powers the readable table you see above.
When you search a domain, the tool sends your request to rdap.org, a public bootstrap service that automatically finds and queries the correct authoritative registry for that domain’s specific top level domain (.com, .org, .io, and so on), then returns the registration record for you.

Common Domain Status Codes
Registries report domain status using a standardized set of EPP codes, here are the ones you’ll see most often.
A lock set by the registrar to prevent unauthorized domain transfers, this is normal and usually intentional, not a warning sign.
The domain is in good standing with no restrictions on it.
The domain has expired and is in the final stage before being released back to public availability.

WHOIS is an older protocol from the 1980s that returns unstructured plain text, formatted differently by every registry, which makes it hard to parse reliably. RDAP (Registration Data Access Protocol) is its modern replacement, standardized by IETF and adopted by ICANN, that returns structured JSON with consistent field names across registries. This tool uses RDAP because it is more reliable and is the direction the entire domain industry has been moving since around 2019.
