How the Domain Age Checker Works
This tool queries the RDAP (Registration Data Access Protocol) — ICANN’s modern, structured replacement for WHOIS. RDAP returns machine-readable JSON with registration dates, registrar details, nameservers, and domain status.
RDAP is supported by all major registries for generic TLDs (.com, .net, .org, .io, etc.). Some country-code TLDs (ccTLDs like .de, .uk, .fr) have their own RDAP endpoints and may not always return full data.
Registration date
Exact date the domain was first registered, down to the day. Domain age is computed from this date to today.
Expiry date
When the domain registration expires. The visual bar shows how much of the registration term has elapsed.
Registrar and status
Which registrar manages the domain and current status flags such as clientTransferProhibited.
Nameservers
The DNS nameservers the domain is pointed to — useful for identifying hosting provider or CDN.
Common Questions
Questions About the Domain Age Checker
Older domains tend to have more accumulated backlinks, indexed pages, and trust signals. Google has said domain age alone is not a significant ranking factor, but the content and links built over years are. A domain registered in 1998 is not automatically better than one from 2020 — but it has had more time to build authority.
RDAP (Registration Data Access Protocol) is the modern successor to WHOIS. Unlike WHOIS which returns plain text in inconsistent formats, RDAP returns structured JSON, supports HTTPS, and handles internationalized domain names properly. ICANN mandated all registries support RDAP. This tool uses RDAP instead of WHOIS for cleaner, more reliable data.
Some country-code TLD registries do not publish registration dates in RDAP, or have privacy policies that redact this information. Newly registered domains may take hours to appear in RDAP. Some smaller registries have not fully implemented RDAP yet and the data may be incomplete.
Enter any domain name in this tool. Domain registration data is public information available to anyone via RDAP and WHOIS. Registrant contact information may be redacted under GDPR and similar privacy regulations, but registration and expiry dates remain publicly accessible.
The expiry bar shows the proportion of the current registration term that has elapsed. Green means plenty of time remains, yellow means the domain is approaching renewal, red means the domain is close to expiry and the owner should renew soon to avoid losing it.
